A training snorkel is among the most valuable tools available to aid a swimmer’s development. It has also been viewed as an intimidating piece of equipment for first-time users. Coaches hear concerns like, “What if I inhale water through the tube?!” and “How am I supposed to do a flip-turn with this thing on?!”. These obstacles are common but once the swimmer is taught how to overcome them, he or she can start to reap the benefits:
Improved stroke balance and coordination
Improved cardiovascular strength and lung capacity
Allowed consistent kicking
Hip and leg elevation with eyes being focused on the bottom of the pool
Even with all of these great benefits, the race for innovation is ongoing between the brands of the swimming industry. For today, we’ll focus on the MP Michael Phelps FOCUS Training Snorkel. This particular snorkel is available in a regular and small size. All of our snorkels for online purchase can be viewed here
The MP Michael Phelps FOCUS Training Snorkel – Quick Facts
There are a three main ideas behind the creation of this snorkel that improve upon other designs.
Improved Stability
The triangular tube shape will inhibit side-to-side rotation from any forward swimming momentum and wave interference. In addition, the hydrodynamic tube reduces drag.
Improved Comfort
There is a cushion on the light-weight head bracket for the swimmer’s forehead to rest on. To minimize jaw fatigue, the snorkel features a silicone comfo-bite mouthpiece.
Cardiovascular Strength and Lung Capacity
There is a one-way purge valve to clear excess water from the tube. MP Michael Phelps also offers a restrictor cap that reduces air flow into the snorkel. This product is sold separately and can be purchased here
Nick’s Product Review
For a few months now I’ve been using the MP Michael Phelps FOCUS Training Snorkel in all of my swim workouts. I’m a former college, high school, and club swimmer so I’ve had some experience trying out different products. The first thing I noticed was how closely the snorkel aligns with my face and head. It didn’t feel bulky or unstable at all, more like an extension of myself. Once I tightened the straps, I noticed how comfortable the head bracket was on my forehead. In the past, certain head brackets have pinched my skin. Something that did take me by surprise was how wide the mouthpiece was. Other snorkels seem to have smaller mouthpieces, requiring a more shallow bite. I acclimated quickly though and without biting down hard at all, the comfort of the silicone kept me focused on my stroke rather than keeping the snorkel in place.
Once I started to swim, the snorkel did not wobble at all, remaining centered even during the flip turn! It took a couple attempts to expel all the water out but after acclimating to the larger mouthpiece, this became second nature again. Overall, I’d say I’ve had a positive experience with this snorkel and would highly recommend it for all competitive levels of swimming.
